Pool your family's Avios.
British Airways lets up to 7 people who live at the same address pool their Avios into one Household Account. It's free, and kids can join. Anyone in the household can spend the shared balance. You can also add up to 5 family or friends who don't live with you, and book Reward Flights for them from the pool. Set it up in your British Airways Club account.

United miles never expire.
United MileagePlus miles don't expire. You don't have to fly or spend to keep them alive. One catch: once you book a United award, the ticket is good for one year from the day it's issued, and your trip has to start within that year.

American miles: 24 months, then gone.
AAdvantage miles expire if your account has no earning or redeeming activity in any 24 months. One earn or one award — a flight, a partner, an AAdvantage card purchase, even buying miles — gives all your miles a fresh 24 months. Your aa.com account shows the earliest date they could expire. Under 21 with a birth date in your profile: no expiry. Primary AAdvantage cardmembers: no expiry while the card stays open. Already expired? Within 24 months you can pay $60 to $2,000 to bring them back, and that fee is not refundable.

JetBlue: pool points with up to 7.
TrueBlue Points Pooling lets 2 to 7 people combine points — family or friends. The Pool Leader must be 21 or older. Everyone contributes 100% of their points, but you can still spend your own balance, and you can leave with whatever you have left unused. Only the Pool Leader and people they allow can spend from the shared pot, so pick people you trust. On jetblue.com, log into TrueBlue, open your Dashboard, and start a pool. If you remove someone, that spot stays locked for six months.

Southwest Companion Pass: mind the calendar.
Fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 135,000 qualifying points in one calendar year. Then one person you pick flies with you free of airline charges — taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way still apply. The pass runs the rest of that year plus the whole next year. Card points count only if they post to your Rapid Rewards account the same year, so buys after your December statement date count for next year. Bought or transferred points don't count.

Aeroplan stopover: 5,000 points.
On an international Aeroplan award, add a stopover for 5,000 points. One stopover per direction. Stay up to 45 days. It has to be outside Canada and the U.S. On aircanada.com, pick Multi-city/Stopover when you search with points. Under 24 hours is a layover — no extra points.

American award: cancel before you fly.
An AAdvantage award can be canceled on aa.com anytime before the first flight leaves. Miles go back. Eligible taxes and fees come back. No fee — as long as you cancel within one year of buying the ticket. Partner trips or trips that already started: call Reservations.

Find the seat. Then transfer.
Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to airlines and hotels are final. Once the points leave Chase, they cannot be refunded or canceled. Chase itself says make sure the award is available first. Transfer in 1,000-point chunks. Most post by the next business day; some take up to seven.

Delta from the U.S.: cancel is free.
A SkyMiles award that starts in the U.S. or Canada can be changed or canceled before departure. No change fee. No redeposit fee. If the new ticket costs more miles, you pay the extra. Basic awards still take miles. Starting outside the U.S. or Canada can still cost a fee. Do it before the plane leaves.

Cancel the ticket. Miles usually come back.
Once points sit at the airline they do not go back to the card. The award ticket is different. Most programs let you cancel before departure and put the miles back in the airline account. Alaska Atmos: cancel before the flight leaves — points and taxes come back. (A partner booking fee does not.) Flying Blue: miles come back; the fee is usually €70, not $70. From September 8, 2026, Flying Blue Light awards may not refund — check the fare before you book.
